Anguilla's J'quan Samuels Wins New Mexico High School State High Jump Championship, Excels in Long Jump
Anguilla - J'quan Samuels of Anguilla has made history by winning the High School State Championship in the High Jump for Menaul High School in New Mexico. Samuels, who is attending Menaul on a basketball scholarship, took up track and field after the basketball season and has quickly become one of the state's top athletes. In addition to his high jump title, Samuels is currently ranked number two in New Mexico in the high school long jump.
Samuels' journey to this achievement began when he was scouted by Coach Najmuddin Ahmad at the inaugural Reach One Teach One – Building Bridges to Success Summer Basketball Camp, organized by the Top Hill Basketball Club in Anguilla. His transition from basketball to track and field highlights his remarkable athletic versatility and determination.
Coach Najmuddin Ahmad praised Samuels' work ethic and adaptability saying "J'quan's dedication and willingness to embrace new challenges are truly inspiring. He's a natural competitor, and his success in both basketball and track and field speak volumes about his character and athletic ability. We couldn't be prouder of what he's accomplished in such a short time."
Mrs. Evette Harrigan, President of the Top Hill Basketball Club, reflected on the significance of Samuels' success for the Anguilla community "All it takes is giving our youths a real opportunity, and we'll see the change we need-one success story at a time. That's exactly why I'm so passionate about this club."
Beresford Mack, CEO of Reach One Teach One, added "This is exactly why we created the Reach One Teach One camp – to open doors for young people like J'quan. His accomplishments show what's possible when talent is given the right opportunity and support. We congratulate J'quan and thank our partners for helping make these dreams a reality."
Samuels' dual success in basketball and track and field underscores the growing impact of international youth sports programs and the importance of providing pathways for talented Anguillan athletes. His achievements are a source of pride for both Anguilla and Menaul High School, and his story continues to inspire the next generation.
